While conventional 3D printers can usually only produce hand-sized objects, The newly developed BigRep One by Berlin based German designers Marcel Tasler and Lukas Oehmigen, adds a new dimension for 3D printing and 3D manufacturing because of its size. With a build volume that stretches to 1,147 x 1000 x 1,188mm or just over one meter cubed, the CNC has 27 times the volume of the average large desktop 3D printer, making it the largest commercially available fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D Printer on the market, and opening the imagination to yet unfathomed application areas. The BigRep ONE is capable of producing volumes of over one cubic meter in size directly with the rapid prototyping process – from models in 1:1 scale and final products, such as full and large scale furniture pieces to complex architectural or artistic objects or rock solid engineering parts. Fully constructed with an aluminum frame, incorporating high-quality machined components that guarantee thousands of successful printing hours, the device can print using over 8 different materials.-a standard range that includes PLA, ABS, PVA, HDPE, PC, Nylon, TPE, Laywood and Laybrick. Oehmigen and Tasler started the project two years ago with Newten Ventures, a Berlin-based investment frim funded the project. With the massive build volume, still comes a massive price though: €30,000 a piece. And although Oehmigen developed a high-performance extruder that’s said to be ‘quite quick’, the BigRep One FDM technology is notoriously slow: even with this fast extruder, it will still take days to produce the massive prints. So, it might still take some time, before the BigRep hits every household. (mb) http://bigrep.com/1/Images © BigRep
