AUST & AMELUNG: LIKE PAPER: THE LAMP AS A CHARACTER

refugium AUST & AMELUNG- LIKE PAPER- THE LAMP AS A CHARACTER

Recently awarded with a Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in the Newcomer category, the lamp series of the Like Paper series by Kassel-based German design studio Aust & Amelung are first and foremost about playing with perception, personalizing production and (re-)staging the interior, while the light itself is only accessory. What looks like folded paper at first sight, is actually made out of slewed concrete. And although the manufacturing follows certain paper patterns, the completed lampshades each develop an individuality of their own through edges, kinks and creases – in a combination that makes each of them unique. The series also exists through distortion: while some lamps shine downwards by dangling from the ceiling, others can only be laid on the table, the cabinet or the floor and gleam diffused in strange directions, and are meant to look like exhausted. aust & amelung are Miriam Aust and Sebastian Amelung.
