POETRY & INDUSTRY: BARBARA SCHMIDT AT THE BAUHAUS-ARCHIV
Ever since her studies in Halle and Helsinki, Barbara Schmidt, born in eastern Berlin and one of Germany’s most successful porcelain designers, has been concerned with design that is suitable for everyday use, affordable and aesthetically appealing.
The title of the ‘Poetry & Industry’ exhibition refers to the two poles between which she situates her work – a constant interweaving of creative craft design and serial production. While teaching at various colleges of art Barbara Schmidt works as a freelance artist and as the head designer for KAHLA / Thuringia Porcelain Ltd. The exhibition links the central thread of her biography with objects characteristic
of her approach and her work to date, along with a parallel narrative that reveals her design strategies and processes in each case, from the idea to the finished product. Through November 4. (mb) Bauhaus-Archiv e.v. / Museum für Gestaltung, Klingelhöferstraße 14, 10785 Berlin-Tiergarten
