BEING CHINESE IN BERLIN: YANG LIU: OST TRIFFT WEST/ EAST MEETS WEST: TWO APPROACHES TO SELF-EXPRESSION

It’s a few years old, and a bit simplistic, all too generalizing, and biased in its approach, but now that the brilliant Brainpickings brought it up, and just because of its minimal beauty, ‘saying so much by showing so little’, we cannot resist to publish an image of the infographic series which China-born but Berlin based designer Yang Liu started as a graduation project and in which she compared different several aspects of the east (red) to its equivalent in the west (blue), and more in particular in China and Germany, where she has been living since she was 14. The subjects range from differences in self-perception to evolution of transportation, and from the individualistic tendencies of the West versus the pluralism of Asian societies, to how differently Westerners and Easterners read the emotions of others. The series Ost trifft West, of the now very famous Yang Liu, was later the subject of a book and an exhibition. This pictograph shows the Western ‘Complexity of Self-Expression’ compared to the Eastern one. (mb)http://www.yangliudesign.com/http://www.brainpickings.org/
