SOON AT THE REFUGIUM :: DAVID HANAUER: THE LIVING STRUCTURE (TABLE)

Shifting between a sculptural object and a piece of furniture, David Hanauer’s design of a table or a chair shows and materializes how social interaction in space can develop, and how it depends on a conscious decision of the viewer or user. Each object can either be placed on the floor or mounted to a wall. By adding two sheets of metal the rectangular wooden structure becomes a functional table, while the addition of a leather cushion to the cubical object creates the seating of a chair. But the geometrical shape of the design in American maple wood and powder-coated aluminum also sketches the schematic structures of a chair and a table in such a high degree of abstraction that they are merely reduced to an idea, and presented as just another possibility, enabling but not imposing its own use, giving the viewer the option of disregarding function.
